An important subject that many are unaware of is what an Advanced Medical Directive entails. At Losavio & DeJean, we recommend Advanced Medical Directives as part of our estate planning package that is associated with your Health Care Power of Attorney.
Advanced Medical Directives are actually declarations, or instructions, to your loved ones as to how you want your medical treatment handled in specific medical situations. For example, if you are in a vegetative state and have no chance of regaining any higher mental functioning no matter what is done, do you want to have chemotherapy? Do you want to have CPR? Do you want to have dialysis? These are important decisions that need to be made at the time you still have capacity. When you are unable to communicate your intentions, this is when your family begins to have problems.
An Advanced Medical Directive provides you will several different advantages:
- It allows you to control your medical treatment. That way people know exactly what you want to do.
- It prevents conflict amongst your family. By you expressing what kind of medical treatment you want, there cannot be a fight as to what decision needs to be made; and
- Lastly, and most importantly, an Advanced Medical Directive relieves the emotional stress from your family so that way they do not have to be worried about what you would want to do in this particular medical situation.
Advanced Medical Directive is an important document that we include in our package. We recommend it to everyone. If you have any questions about Powers of Attorney, Advanced Medical Directives, Living Wills, and so on. please contact us at 225-769-4200.
