We are often asked what needs to be done so that a beneficiary of a special needs trust can make purchases on his or her own. One way to allow a beneficiary to make purchases is to have a customized credit card for the special needs trust beneficiary.
The customized credit card would have limits on purchases and block access to cash. The card would only allow specific merchandise or categories of spending, which would allow the special needs trust beneficiary to safely purchase what he or she needs when he or she needs it. Otherwise, the use of the card could cause the beneficiary to lose their government benefits.
